Alec Roback – Volunteering to Run for the Joseph Michael Chubbuck Foundation
I am honored to be running the 41st Boilermaker as a member of Team Joseph Michael under the Joseph Michael Chubbuck Foundation. It is a privilege to be a part of such an amazing foundation that was set-up in memory of Joseph Michael for his courageous battle with such a terrible disease. After reading Joey’s Story, I knew this was a charity I wanted to help.
This Foundation provides financial assistance to cancer patients and their families; it provides needed equipment to hospitals, Hospice, and cancer treatment centers. It also supports cancer research, and assists patients and their families in need of information and guidance. These services and programs are extremely critical to patients and families who are undergoing the battle of cancer.
When reading about this Foundation, I knew this was a charity I wanted to help support because my family has been affective several times over the years. Almost 21years ago, several months after I was born, my Dad was diagnosed with cancer. My Dad ended up winning his battle with cancer and also runs the Boilermaker as part of Team Joseph Michael under the JM Chubbuck Foundation. Seven years ago, I lost my Uncle to cancer. He was truly an inspiration and a remarkable person. I am glad to have such fond memories of him. This summer will mark the two years since I lost my Grandmother to her battle with cancer. She wasn’t only my Grandmother but one of my closest friends. She was 90 years old when she was diagnosed and was braver than ever. She amazed our entire family with her strength all the way to end. She would always say, “it could be worse” when no one thought it could possibly be any worse. More recently, my Aunt was diagnosed with cancer. Thankfully, she came out on top- winning her battle against this horrific disease. My Aunt was always strong and always maintained a positive, optimistic outlook throughout her fight. I am very honored to be part of Team Joseph Michael.
